Cannes voted best destination in Europe for festivals and events

Like the Oscars for tourism, the World Travel Awards celebrates cities and companies for providing the best service and experience.

The World Travel Awards announced their 2021 winners today, 22 October, revealing Cannes as the winner in the category for "Best Destination for Festivals and Events". Now, there is only one award left and Cannes is in the running for the world title!

After having been recognised as the best French city, Cannes has just been voted best European destination at the World Travel Awards 2021, considered as the Oscars of Tourism. Already known as the 'Festival city', Cannes took first place ahead of London, Barcelona and Munich. The win, especially coming at a time of such hardship for the events and tourism industry is recognition of the know-how of the entire events ecosystem in Cannes.

Clearly, Mayor David Lisnard was thrilled with the result. In a statement he acknowledged the work of everyone involved in making Cannes such a great place for festival goers, from the hotel staff to the private drivers:

"I would like to applaud the efforts and work carried out by all the professionals in our destination: restaurateurs, shopkeepers, hotel staff, florists, beach attendants, taxis and VTCs, security services, communication teams, sales staff, etc. This title is an international recognition of Cannes' unique know-how and places us as a world leader in the hosting and organisation of prestigious events.

A new international recognition for Cannes

Known worldwide for its film festival, Cannes has been hosting for years the biggest international festivals and events such as the Cannes Film Festival, CANNESERIES, MIPIM, Cannes Lions, Tax Free World Exhibition, MIPCOM, Cannes Yachting Festival and the International Games Festival, the Cannes - Côte d'Azur France Dance Festival, the Electronic Beaches, the Pyrotechnic Art Festival, the Nice - Cannes Marathon, the Royal Regattas...

The Palais des Festivals et des Congrès is located in the heart of Cannes, so participants of the events can enjoy the city on foot. From the Croisette to the Suquet, via the beaches, hotels and restaurants, the whole destination vibrates to the rhythm of the shows and festivals.

The city hall works closely with the Palais des Festivals et Congres and local businesses to make sure every event goes smoothly. For this reason, the city is united around the events business and all Cannes professionals bring their talents together to make the city shine internationally.

Mayor Lisnard oftern refers to Cannes as "village mondial" to signify that the city is small and personal like a village but works on the world stage. This feeling is certainly echoed in the international visitors that can stroll the city from one end to another by foot, enjoying the beauty of the surroundings and never getting lost!

Constantly improving

As the leader in the event industry in Europe and the leading convention centre in France (outside of Paris), Cannes is constantly developing its activity with new festivals such as the World Festival of Artificial Intelligence (coming next year) and with new services such as the installation of a permanent digital studio equipped with cutting-edge technology.

The World Travel Awards are recognised throughout the world and bring additional worldwide visibility to Cannes, perhaps creating even more fabulous festivals to come.

Hosting and organising events are part of the city's DNA. Numerous events were born in Cannes and have become must-sees in their industry, like the world famous Festival de Cannes, which had its 74th edition this year and Cannes Lions has been rewarding the advertising world for 67 years!

All of these events are made possible by the one and only building that transforms itself over and over to host these events: The Palais des Festivals.

Jean-Michel Arnaud, President of the Palais des Festivals and Congres stated:

"The Palais des Festivals and Congres exists to 'welcome the world sustainably', it is as such the economic lung of Cannes and at the heart of the promotion of its destination. We are constantly investing and innovating in order to offer the most differentiated services to our clients and partners in terms of reception, sanitary security, hybrid solutions...
In addition, we put all our energy into incubating new trade shows, festivals and congresses. This recognition from the World Travel Awards acknowledges the work carried out for many years by the teams of the Palais du Festivals et des Congrès and encourages us to always aim for excellence.

A giant congratulations to the city of Cannes and all the workers in the tourism and service industry for working tirelessly all year in order to make Cannes the best getaway for so many industry events. Bravo!
